MoVelocity: a mass movement to move mass

Getting your community in motion.

Now, here’s a nutty idea. What if you could get your community engaged something that improves the quality of life, creates individual and group involvement, and transforms how we all think and act about the connection between health and activity.

What if there was no fee, no membership costs, no prizes to buy or fund raising pleas to make.

That’s exactly what a few dedicated folks from the heart of Douglas County wanted to do. The result was a barely organized team that created MoVelocity.org

The concept is quite simple; MoVelocity wants you to MOVE!

That’s it!

MoVelocity is people just like you who are on the move.  If you’re walking, running, wheeling, crawling, or doing just about anything that self-propels you through this earthly space, you should be part of MoVelocity

Here’s how it works: go to the website (movelocity.org) and register. Type in your activity (walking, biking, gardening, you name it.  Indicate your miles traveled or the minutes you were engaged and viola! Your miles are logged for you and added to your total. You can even make personal journal entries each time.

Miles posted are then added to the community total for everyone to see.  To date, MoVelocity has logged 686,601 miles from participants just like you. People use MoVelocity as a way to grow individually and at the same time be a part of a very positive local movement.

MoVelocity is a no-cost, no-equipment, no-age barrier program that requires nothing of you but the desire to move. They’ve had great success engaging a wide variety of participants; from elementary and middle schools, corporate and religious groups, to seniors who are only able to walk down the hallway….they log all miles!

You’ve most likely seen, read, or heard about MoVelocity thanks to the great support from local media. In fact the new “I Logged On” spots are now being aired on KPIC.

MoVelocity encourages people doing any activity to log on to the web site. Over 10,000 bright green “MoVelocity” bracelets have been given away as reminders to keep active and log on.  People who seemingly have little in common see a stranger wearing the green MoVelocity bracelets and conversations begin. How great is that for bringing communities together.  Will this kind of shocking open conversation stimulate talk about safer walking and biking paths, neighbors meeting to walk together or healthy lifestyles? We can only hope so.

What’s confusing to some folks is why are they doing this?  Is it to lose weight or to save fuel?  The answer is of course, yes. Yes, to what ever it is that motivates you to move your mass.

Recently MoVelocity had the opportunity to present this crazy idea at the Healthy Oregon Initiatives Institute in Bend, Oregon.  This was a terrific forum of concerned Oregonians from a variety of professions with the common goal of making our state a healthier place to live.  We felt fortunate to be able to take part and present the MoVelocity concept to a larger audience.

Now, we want to make MoVelocity a state-wide program.  In fact, even though we’ve registered the name, “MoVelocity”, we really want to give it all away. We’ll help any community with start up plans, web design, promotional components etc. We want to see MoVelocity green bracelets from Portland to Ashland and all points from Yachats to Ontario, from….well, you get the picture.

That’s it, really, no pyramid scheme, no fund raising, not even a friends and family plan. Just you and your community moving together toward a better life.
